Council Grove, Kansas has a rich and interesting history. Here are some facts about the village:
1. Council Grove was founded in 1825 and was an important stopping point on the Santa Fe Trail.
2. The Treaty of Council Grove was signed in 1825 between the Osage Nation and the United States government.
3. The town has an historic Main Street which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
4. The Madonna of the Trail monument is located in Council Grove. It is one of 12 identical statues across the nation dedicated to the pioneer mothers who traveled westward.
5. The Hays House restaurant has been in operation since 1857 and is the oldest continuously operated restaurant west of the Mississippi River.
6. Council Grove was the inspiration for a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier in 1856 titled "The Kansas Emigrants."
7. The town is home to the Last Chance Store, which was the last stop for westbound pioneers to purchase supplies before heading west.
